5 Common Concrete Questions Answered

As a Roanoke Valley business that’s been in the area for over 30 years, we’ve answered our fair share ofbusiness and residential concrete questions. And while we’re always happy to answer, if you’re in the early stages of research, you may not have spoken to anyone yet. So today, we answer some of your most common concrete questions.

How Do I Know If My Concrete Needs Repair Or Just Maintenance?

Unfortunately, this common concrete question is a bit complex. Most of the time, the best way to know if you need concrete repair or maintenance is to talk to professionals like Blue Ridge Coatings. We can evaluate its conditions or ask diagnostic questions to better understand your needs.

However, regular cleaning will help to maintain your concrete for longer. Just make sure you do it correctly!

How Do I Protect My Concrete from Damage?

We like this common concrete question because it combines our two specialties—concrete and sealants. One of the best ways to protect your concrete from damage is to hire a professional like Blue Ridge Coatings to add a protective layer of epoxy.

Sealants are an excellent choice for improving the longevity of your concrete surfaces. In addition, you should be careful not to drop anything heavy on your concrete, clean it regularly (and according to the manufacturer’s instructions), and protect it from the elements whenever possible.

Can We Seal Existing Concrete with Epoxy?

Sometimes, customers get concrete and later realize they’d like to add more protection. That’s when we get the call to see if we can add an epoxy coating to protect their existing concrete.

Luckily, the answer to that question is often yes. While many factors are in play, including the condition of your existing concrete (i.e., if it’s majorly deteriorated, you should replace it instead of only sealing it), in many cases, we can add a seal coat to the concrete even if it has some age on it.

The process will take additional steps to get older concrete into the proper condition.

What Are The Common Causes Of Concrete Damage?

We’ll answer this common concrete question in greater detail in a future post because there’s a lot to say about it! But for now, suffice it to say that some of the most common causes of concrete damage are weather, impact from heavy objects, improper (or lack of) cleaning, erosion and exposure to the elements, and gradual wear and tear from use.

Can I DIY a Concrete Repair?

We don’t recommend repairing concrete yourself. It’s a complex and delicate process that is best left to professionals. While it may seem as simple as filling a gap to the untrained eye, in reality, bonding new concrete to old is a process affected by temperature, technique, and chemistry and is best left to the pros.

What Common Concrete Questions Did We Miss?

Since everyone has their own preferences and specifications for every job, and each of us comes to a situation with different experiences, it’s impossible for us to address all the common concrete questions every potential customer has in a single post. If you have one that we missed, give us a call, and we’ll be happy to answer.
